Unleashing Screensaver: May 11th

The visual project Iconosphere – the sphere within us was created by students of visual studies course – Jakub Ketman, Radka Krčová, Tomáš Holešovský, Václav Kmoníček and Barbora Brožová – under moderate supervision of Martin Foret, Ph.D. The visual studies course is under governance of the Department of Media and Cultural Studies and Journalism of Palacky University in Olomouc. The course tends to be an introductory view into the issues of visual studies, visual culture and all topics incorporated. As we were invited to the program Unleashing Screensaver, we were immediately highly interested in the project and wanted to create a content which would be worthy of this opportunity.

All important is told by the name of our project: Iconosphere – the sphere within us. Iconosphere is a phenomenon from today that is somehow ignored in our everyday life. It is something as natural and ubiquitous as air. The consumption of pictures, videos, podcasts, live streaming, advertisements, texts – audio-visual content in general in everyday life is as natural and ubiquitous as breathing. The difference is in the impact of an iconosphere on us. Educational system does not lead children nor students on high schools and mostly nor students at colleges to resistance against the environment full of AV objects. And it does not matter if these objects are beautiful or ugly, useful or useless, appreciated or rejected.

Iconosphere is something even we as persons with ability to operate on social networks are building around us. It is us ourselves who are creating this trap, full of tempting objects and subjects too. However, iconosphere is also something what absorbs the social world around us and thanks to it we understand the world around us. Or we try at least.

Our project tries to show how the (icono)sphere is made. We want to show that we must step off our overfull image bubble and give a try to explore the surroundings only by our own eyes, ears, nose, tongue and hands. It is the vicious circle we must try to interrupt. Our lives became so pleasant like never before. Even though our current world is providing us enormous number of devices which could improve our life, we are prisoners of our success too. In our piece of work, we want to appeal on the human in every human being. We want the spectators stop being cyborgs with smart devices always in their hands and feel the visualization of the real world in better resolution then 4K. But it does not mean we are techno sceptics – we are quite the opposite. We really believe technology brings (not boundlessly) improvements to our futile lives.
